Why are followers of the Church of Latter Day Saints known as Mormons?

We use the Book of Mormon and the Bible. One of the writers of the Book of Mormon is a prophet named Mormon. So we came by Mormon as a nickname. It was originally an insult but its become an affectionate nickname for us throughout the world.
