Was This Too Forward Of Me?

Been out with this guy a few times; I like him. We havent slept together yet. Of the 4 dates,we had a drink at his apartment once and listened to music. Then it seems like since then he thinks that just hanging out at his place is good enough. So, I went there another time after that. But I dont want to make this a habit. He asked me to spend the nite w/ him the other day when I saw him and I said no - nicely. The next day we were chatting on the comuter and I said ''can I be so bold as to ask you to work a little harder - say a dinner or a movie?'' - and he replied by saying something to the effect that he is capable of making plns and I'll get to that' (with a smiley face) . But then later I thought to myself, I hope he didn't take offense to that. I wasn't trying to bruise his ego. But I wanted to let him know subtly that I didnt want to just be hanging out at his place - that that is not my idea of a date. Because I dont want to be put in a position where we sleep together before Im ready just because I am drinking or something. You know? Was that statement too forward/harsh?
