Dog makes hole in wall!?

Hi, my American Staffordshire Terrier mix recently made a hole in the drywall of my place. Wondering if this is common in dogs and why? Also, he's 10 months old and does not like to be left home alone. Could it be he did this out of boredom the day we were gone for more than 4 hours? Help?! Ahhh!
