Should I call or text him?

Ive had this complicated unlabeled relationship with a guy Ive known for years. It was always FWB but with a lot of drama and emotions on both ends. He always responds, calls back etc. But the last time we spoke which was over a week ago, the conversation was almost two hours long and it ended fine. The problem is, he knows how much I care and no matter what I am always still there texting, calling. So, instead of being up his I decided to take a break. However its bugging me, I dont know if backing off and going MIA is good or bad. Afterall, we are not in a serious relationship just have history. So should I text him a smile or something? Or just wait, to see exactly how long it takes him to intiate contact? Hes always told me, that it was up to me, to get things right ..that the ball was in my court. So, a part of me thinks giving him space without him asking for it, may be a good thing. Any advice???
